Life can get busy. And sometimes, we find ourselves feeling a bit distant from God and even those closest to us. But then, something happens. A quiet moment in nature, a kind word from a friend, a passage from the Bible that speaks directly to our heart. In those moments, it’s like God is giving us a little nudge, a gentle reminder of His love and presence. A mentor of mine liked to call these moments “deposits of grace.”
These deposits of grace are those small, unexpected moments that fill our hearts and remind us that God is always with us and that even when we are a mess, there is still goodness to be discovered. They can happen anywhere, at any time. It might be the beauty of a sunset, the laughter of a child, or a feeling of peace that washes over you in the middle of a chaotic day.
Just the other day, I was walking my dogs and noticed a patch of daffodils growing in some underbrush. They didn’t belong there, and yet, there they were. Defying conventional flower gardening and growing where they wished. It was just as much the wonder of how they got where they were as it was their natural beauty that caught me off guard.
When we recognize these moments for what they are—gifts from God—they can transform our perspective. They can fill us with a sense of gratitude, joy, and renewed faith. These deposits of grace might be brief, but their impact can last a long time. They sustain us through dry spells, strengthen us in times of trouble, and remind us that we are always held in God’s loving hands.
So, how can we cultivate these moments? How can we make ourselves more aware of these deposits of grace? Here are a few ideas:
- Start a gratitude journal: Each day, write down a few things you are grateful for. This practice can help you become more aware of the good things in your life, including those little moments that might be deposits of grace.
- Spend time in nature: There’s something about being outdoors that can help us connect with God. Take a walk in the woods, sit by the ocean, or simply spend some time in your backyard.
- Pray and meditate: Make time each day to connect with God in prayer and meditation. This can help you quiet your mind and open your heart to receive His grace.
- Be present in the moment: Pay attention to the small things. Don’t rush through your day. Savor the good moments and leave room in your schedule to be present.
- Look for God in others: God often reveals Himself through the people in our lives. Pay attention to the kindness, love, and support that you receive from others.
What are some “deposits of grace” that you’ve experienced recently? I’d love for you to share them in the comments.
